Redneck Tesla
A Toyota Sienna with a handmade rooftop solar panel frame and a homemade portable power station in a box, built to keep a road trip's worth of electronic devices powered. Lovingly called the Redneck Tesla.

About the work
Redneck Tesla gives a Toyota Sienna a second occupation: carrying a small solar array as well as everyone else’s luggage. Multiple panels sit in a handmade frame across the roof rails, their dark rectangular surfaces set against perforated metal and the familiar contours of a minivan. A gallery might call this an intervention in mobile domestic infrastructure. The passengers are more likely to ask where they can plug in.
The rooftop array takes the lead, followed by a closer view of its wiring. The cables run flush through the rear hatch grommets and into the vehicle’s electrical setup, linking the rooftop project with a homemade portable solar power station in a box. Inside the van, the station shares space with travel bags and connected devices: the practical destination of all that measuring, framing, and wiring.
Built for road trips loaded with electronics, the project brings homemade ingenuity to an ordinary family vehicle. Its affectionately bestowed name, Redneck Tesla, fits the spirit of the work: useful, a little improbable at first glance, and made to go places. Here, the most persuasive artist’s statement is a charged device somewhere between stops.
